Bits and Pieces!!

Although I don't feel ready to post "completed" pictures and because I don't want to ruin the surprise of the way the finished product will look, I've decided to post some bits and pieces of the remodel. Let me just tell you...it is gorgeous!

This morning when I was getting ready for work I stopped to take a look around and I didn't want to leave, it's so beautiful!

Jan said last night she felt a little bad about having such nice things. I'm sure you would all agree with me that she deserves it! She has been more than generous with her time, talents, and money. Jan and Merrill have been wonderful hosts for so many family get togethers! We are grateful to them and are happy for them to have such awesome upgrade to their home!

And The Work Continues...

Like many of you, I've been away from the Bailey house for quite sometime and have missed seeing the recent progress of the remodel. Luckily Jan sent me pictures to post so you all can see it too. (Shh...no one tell Gina I let Eli sit around in his jammies watching Sponge Bob while I finished it...it's not all bad, he snacked on carrot slices - his choice!)

The lighting is in and the floor is being installed. The floor is installed but it still needs to be stained and finished.
Next step installation of the granite counter tops.....Oh WAIT.....I need to take a step back. I neglected to post pictures of the selection of the granite. Jan went to the granite supplier and was able to set the templates for the counter tops on the sections of granite she liked the best.Ok back to the installation....I really like the granite window sill, good idea Andrew! (and check out the sink! It took quite some time to find just the right under counter mount sink)
The floor still needs to be stained. The wall on the right is the new paint color, the other walls will have a different treatment.
Looks great so far...I'm so excited to see what's next!!

Random Update

I usually like to update this blog when some new milestone has been met, and right now I feel like we're in the middle of several milestones but not quite there yet. That being said, I did receive a request for an update so here goes.

I promise before the end of this blog I will get a better picture of Andrew. I'm not sure what Andrew's exact title for the project is but suffice it to say without him none of this would be possible. He is the Architect, General Contractor, and I was surprised to find out he is also the casework installer!

It's looking like a kitchen again. The cabinets are beautiful. Painting, flooring, counter tops, sink, stove and dishwasher install still have to be done (not in that order)

Since Merrill really liked the look of the textured ceiling in the front room, or maybe it was just that he has always hated the acoustical "popcorn" ceiling, he decided to have the acoustical ceiling removed in the rest of the house. Best decision of all time...he hired a professional to do it!

The plastic draping from wall to wall was kind of eerie walking down the hall into the living room, and Jan and Merrill's bedroom. We decided it would be great for a spook alley at Halloween.

Lindsay's sneaking a peak at the work in progress.

Next up, the back step had to be enlarged because of the slider. The concrete steps are formed, the brick needs to be applied.
And finally, a sneak peak at the granite slab that will become the counter top in the kitchen.

From a Different Angle

Drywall is complete, textured ceiling finished and the painters primed the walls.
I was taking this picture from the back kitchen wall toward the front door when I got an idea....
.....Panorama pictures!!!
And just to make you excited for my next update....cabinets are going in as I type this!

All Walled In

Drywall makes all the difference. The great room/kitchen is really starting to take shape.
I came home from work to this welcome sight. The greenboard drywall is installed around the sink area because it is water resistant.
The arch is looking awesome! (the red stuff is glue used to secure the plastic trim)

Here's Merrill inspecting the workGene and Holly came over to check out the progress and Gene and Merrill discuss the details of the work completed and what's next. Jan and Merrill are really grateful to Gene for the supervision he is giving the project. Things get done when Gene's around. They are also very grateful for the many hours John has put into working on the remodel and meeting with the Inspectors. John is always willing to do whatever he can to help.
What GREAT brothers they are!

Color Speaks to the Soul!

So many colors to choose from....Sunbeam Yellow, Warm Butterscotch, Birdseye Maple, Twine, and Olive Hint. Every square inch of drywall becomes a canvas.

This picture also shows a sneak peek of the kitchen cabinets!
The front runners are Regency Cream (bottom left), Root Beer Float (bottom right), and Desert Floor (green on top)
Here are the colors again with the inspiration piece.....any opinions??

Insulation In

As previously noted because the under counter lights and the over the cupboard lights were energy efficient they were were able to pass the electrical inspection. Next step install the insulation. John and Jan got up early one morning, to make yet another trip to Home Depot, to buy insulation. (Where was Merrill you ask?? Having a fun filled couple of days in VEGAS with his brothers!)

John installed a major portion of the insulation but made sure to leave some for Merrill to finish when he returned. Even Dad got in on the action supervising the work but unfortunately we didn't get a picture.

These pictures show the insulation complete

Windows and Electrical

This past week, all the windows were installed and the electrical and plumbing progressed.

The old kitchen window has been replaced with a window that is a little bit smaller.

Looking at the windows from the outside really shows the difference of the old and new window. The next couple pictures show the electrical installation ready for inpsection. This is the kitchen window.
The back wall of the kitchen.

Looking from the back wall of the kitchen toward the front door, this picture shows the new can lights installed in the ceiling. UPDATE: Unfortunately the electrical did not pass inspection because 50% of the new lighting must be energy efficient. The cans will need to be removed and replaced. New Update: Because the undercounter and over cupboard lighting was energy efficient they were able to pass inspection without removing the cans. The new slider and bathroom window. The steps under the slider will be extended to the wall of the house. You can see the bathroom window is a bit smaller than the original leaving holes for the stucco/drywall to be repaired.
With the demolition of the kitchen we needed to have a place to set up a temp kitchen. Solution - our Outdoor Kitchen!
